Frequently Asked Questions

Understand Lua files, Steam depots and licenses. Find practical help for Night Lua generation, downloads, Night Injection, Nght-Bridge and privacy.

General Questions

What exactly is Night Lua?#

Search for a game or enter its Steam AppID to generate and download available Lua files. Not every game has an available package.

Is Night Lua free to use?#

Yes. Night Lua is free, with no paid generator tier or website account requirement. DarkDevil’s stated project model is to keep it free and open-source. External stores, hosting providers and games have their own terms; free access to the website does not grant rights to third-party files.

About Night Lua explains the project.

Do I need a Steam account to use Night Lua?#

No Steam login or Night Lua registration is used for website search, AppID entry, generation or ZIP downloads. The site does not ask for your Steam password or session cookies.

Using Steam itself, accessing an account’s licensed games or using some Steam services is separate and may require an appropriate signed-in account and entitlement. GitHub can require an account when you submit an issue.

Is Night Lua affiliated with Valve or Steam?#

No. Night Lua is an independent DarkDevil project, not an official Valve product. Steam names and trademarks belong to their owners. Links to official Steam documentation explain Steam behavior; they do not imply endorsement of Night Lua.

What is the difference between Night Lua and Night Injection?#

Night Lua runs in your browser and prepares a downloadable configuration package. Night Injection is the separate Windows application for reviewing supported local files and applying a confirmed plan to a Steam installation.

The companion accepts Lua, manifest and ZIP files and provides plan previews, Dry Run, operation history and guarded file writes. Downloading a package on the website does not install it on your PC. The website works without the companion.

Which browsers are supported?#

Use a current browser with JavaScript and downloads enabled. If a control fails, check the visible error and include your browser version when reporting it.

Lua Files & Steam Depots

What are Lua files used for?#

Lua files contain configuration text and can also contain executable code. Open them in a text editor to view their contents.

What is a Steam Depot, and how is DepotID different from AppID?#

A depot groups files that Steam delivers together. An AppID identifies the application; a DepotID identifies one content group. One game can use different depots for operating systems, languages, shared content or additional content. Steam’s distribution rules determine which groups are delivered and updated.

Use the application’s AppID in Night Lua, not a depot number. See Valve’s depot explanation and the AppID guide.

What are Depot Decryption Keys?#

SteamPipe distributes encrypted depot content. A depot decryption key is cryptographic material used to interpret that protected content; it is different from the AppID, DepotID and a file checksum. Possessing a key is not a grant of ownership or authorization.

Keep decryption keys out of public reports. A key does not grant ownership of game content.

SteamPipe content protection

Does a Lua file include the complete game?#

No. A generated Lua configuration is not a copy of the game’s content. The same is true of a manifest: describing content does not include all of its files. Night Lua packages configuration material, not a playable installation or an account license.

Install games you are entitled to use through the appropriate official distribution workflow.

Why might one game generate multiple files?#

A ZIP can contain copies of a Lua configuration for different destinations, plus any available manifests. Inspect the archive; file counts vary by game.

What is the difference between Lua and ZIP downloads?#

The website always returns a ZIP after successful generation. Open it with an archive viewer to inspect its Lua files and any available manifests.

Inspect the ZIP before use. It contains lua/ and stplug-in/ folders and may include depotcache/. File names and available manifests vary by game.

What is a manifest file, and is one always included?#

A depot manifest describes a version of depot content; it is not the content itself. In this project, manifests are included only when a supported source and its processing rule provide them. A successful Lua-only package is not automatically incomplete.

Do not substitute an unrelated manifest or infer entitlement from a filename. If the companion rejects a package, use its exact validation message to investigate.

Steam Account & Compatibility

Can using Night Lua result in Steam account restrictions?#

No account-safety guarantee is offered. Follow the game’s rules and Steam’s terms.

Are locally added files visible to Steam servers?#

The website does not scan your Steam folders. Steam and games have their own account and ownership checks.

Does adding a local file mean I own the game?#

No. A local configuration and an account’s entitlement are different things. Steam can verify ownership of an AppID during authentication; adding a file does not issue a subscription or change what you officially purchased.

If Steam shows a licensing problem, check the signed-in account and the official purchase or activation record. This FAQ does not offer ownership-check bypasses.

Can I purchase a game later?#

If Steam offers the game to your account and region, use its normal Store purchase or legitimate activation process. A previously downloaded configuration does not replace that process or guarantee a discount, refund or transfer of progress.

For purchase or entitlement problems, use Steam Support.

Where are Steam game files usually stored?#

Use Steam to locate an installed game: open its Library entry, choose Properties, then Installed Files and Browse where available. For library drives, review Steam Settings → Storage. Menu wording can vary by client version.

Libraries can live on different drives, so do not assume a fixed C: path. The companion’s Steam installation folder, its configuration directories and a game’s content folder are separate locations. Save-file locations can differ again.

Official installation troubleshooting

Can Night Lua be used with VR applications?#

VR-specific compatibility has not been established. Accepting a numeric AppID does not prove that a VR application has an available source configuration or that it will work with its headset runtime, hardware or Steam requirements.

Check the application’s official requirements and your entitlement. Report an exact AppID and reproducible issue if you need a compatibility investigation; do not treat generic AppID support as a tested VR feature.

Steam Cloud, Multiplayer & Workshop

Does Steam Cloud work with locally configured games?#

Local configuration does not guarantee cloud synchronization. Steam Cloud needs the game’s integration and enabled settings; account access and the game’s licensing requirements still matter. Night Lua does not implement or repair Cloud sync.

Back up important saves before changing files or resolving a sync conflict. Save paths are game-specific, and recovery of an overwritten or missing save cannot be guaranteed. See Steam Cloud documentation.

Can I play multiplayer games?#

Only when the particular game’s supported online requirements are met. A Lua package does not supply multiplayer compatibility, an online entitlement, an anti-cheat exemption or a working game server. Game versions and service availability also matter.

Night Lua does not certify online play for every AppID. Follow the game’s official multiplayer instructions and required account checks.

Can I play with friends who purchased the game?#

Your friend’s purchase does not grant your account access. Use an officially supported mode with the necessary entitlements, compatible game versions and any required accounts. A friend invitation is not proof that those requirements are satisfied.

If an invite fails, check the game’s supported mode and versions rather than replacing authentication files. Read Valve’s ownership explanation.

Why does a Steam invite sometimes mention Spacewar?#

Spacewar is Valve’s Steamworks SDK sample application, associated with AppID 480. An invite showing that name may be associated with the sample AppID rather than the game you expected. This alone does not explain which third-party component caused it.

It does not establish official game support or account safety. Check the actual AppID, launch source and game’s supported integration; do not substitute sample IDs to bypass checks. See the official Spacewar example.

Does Steam Workshop work?#

Workshop provides community content through games that integrate it. Access and item subscriptions depend on the game’s implementation and applicable account, ownership and item requirements. Adding local files does not automatically enable it.

Night Lua has no Workshop subscription or mod-management feature. Use the game’s supported workflow and check compatibility before adding a mod. See Steam Workshop documentation.

Are additional online fixes required?#

Night Lua does not provide or install an Online Fix feature. Its External Files notice identifies separate game-specific support files; it is not a promise of multiplayer support. Night Injection’s documented Steam Fix prerequisite is a different local utility.

Use official game support for connection or version issues. Do not assume that an unrelated third-party patch is necessary, authorized or safe.

Website & File Generation

How do I use the generator?#
  1. Open Generator and search a game name.
  2. Select the correct title and check its AppID.
  3. Choose Generate Files and wait for the result.
  4. Select Download ZIP, then inspect the package before using it.

Advanced → Use AppID instead is the fallback when name search cannot find the application. The complete guide explains each state.

How do I search for a game?#

Enter at least two characters of the game name, select the correct result and check its AppID. You can use the arrow keys and Enter to select a result.

Why can’t I find a game?#

Check spelling, try a shorter title and look for a different display name or edition. Steam Store search is not a complete list of every game, DLC, demo or tool. An empty search result and a missing generation source are different outcomes.

Find the correct AppID on the game’s Store page or SteamDB, then use Advanced. A valid ID can still have no supported configuration. Read the AppID guide.

Can I use an AppID instead of a game name?#

Yes. Expand Advanced → Use AppID instead and paste the application number, such as 620 from a Store /app/620/ URL. The accepted range is 1–4294967295 without leading zeros. Do not paste a depot, subscription or bundle ID.

Valid AppID checks numeric format, not game ownership, existence or source availability. Use the local URL extractor and guide if needed.

What happens when I generate files?#

Select Generate Files and wait for Generation Complete. If generation fails, check the AppID and the displayed error before trying again.

Download ZIP includes Lua configuration files and, when available, manifests. It does not include the game itself or a game license.

Why did file generation fail?#

Check your connection and the AppID. Files may be unavailable for the selected game. Retry temporary failures later, and wait if asked before submitting again.

For persistent problems, report the AppID, the displayed error and the steps that caused it through the support links on Contact & Support. Remove personal details before posting.

Why did I receive one Lua file instead of a ZIP?#

The website always returns a ZIP after successful generation. Open it with an archive viewer to inspect its Lua files and any available manifests.

Does Night Lua support Steam profile imports?#

No Steam profile-import or library-sync function is implemented in this website. Its inputs are a game-name search or one AppID. There is no Plus subscription or paid profile-import feature.

Choose each intended AppID through the existing Generator; do not provide a Steam password, session cookie or profile-export file to a tool claiming those are required here.

What files can I download?#

ZIP packages contain Lua configuration files and any available manifests.

Night Injection & Nght-Bridge

Is Night Injection required?#

Opening Night Injection from the website requires reviewing and confirming the import in the app.

You can inspect a downloaded ZIP without installing the companion.

How does Open in Night Injection work?#

After generation, select Open in Night Injection, allow your browser to open the app, then review the files and confirm the import there.

If the app does not open, install or repair it using Setup. You can also download the ZIP and import it with Browse files.

What is Nght-Bridge?#

Nght-Bridge adds an import button to Steam Store game pages through Millennium. It requires Night Injection and Millennium; it is optional for the website generator.

What is Millennium?#

Millennium is a third-party framework that loads Steam client plugins. Install it separately before enabling Nght-Bridge; it is not a website dependency or a requirement for standalone local file imports.

Follow the official Millennium documentation for its installation and supported versions.

How do I install the Steam integration?#
  1. Install a supported Millennium version first.
  2. Use a compatible Night Injection Setup and select Enable DarkDevil Steam Integration.
  3. Verify the intended Steam installation folder.
  4. Restart Steam after installation or plugin upgrade, then enable Nght-Bridge in Millennium settings.

Check the official release notes for compatible versions. Install the companion and its Steam integration together using Setup.

Is automatic import or Automatic Apply supported?#

Automatic Apply is optional and off by default. See the Nght-Bridge settings guide to enable it.

Nght-Bridge

Which versions and appearance settings does Nght-Bridge support?#

Check the official release notes for compatible versions. Install the companion and its Steam integration together using Setup.

Downloads & Installation

How do I download generated files?#

After Generation Complete, select Download ZIP. The browser is offered night-lua-<AppID>.zip. An External Files notice can also appear for a flagged game; it does not replace or block the normal archive download.

Download Started means the browser was asked to save the file, not that the operating system finished writing it. Check the download list for completion. Download walkthrough

Where are downloaded files saved?#

Your browser chooses its configured download folder or asks you for a location. Open the browser’s download list to reveal the saved file. Night Lua cannot inspect local folders or choose your operating system’s save policy.

The ready archive URL is temporary browser state. If you close or leave the page and it is no longer available, generate a fresh package.

What should I do if a ZIP download fails?#
  1. Read the site error and your browser’s download-list status.
  2. Check connectivity, free disk space and browser download permissions.
  3. Retry the ready ZIP. If you left the page, regenerate before retrying.
  4. Try a current supported browser; if the problem continues, report the AppID, browser version and exact error.

If generation itself failed, follow its error-specific steps instead. Do not treat a blocked or incomplete browser download as a completed installation.

Why can’t I open the downloaded file?#

A .lua file is text for inspection in an editor; it is not a Windows installer. A .zip should be opened with an archive viewer. Manifests are data files, not programs to double-click and run.

Check the actual extension and download status. If a supposed ZIP is an HTML error page or incomplete archive, obtain a fresh file from the original Generator. Do not change an extension to bypass the companion’s validation. File formats

What if an archive is damaged or rejected?#

Delete the incomplete download and generate a new ZIP. If it still fails, report the displayed error.

Why are additional files required for some games?#

The External Files notice links to separate game-specific downloads. They are not installed automatically.

How can I check a Night Injection download?#

Download Night Injection Setup from the official GitHub Releases page.

How do I install Night Injection?#

Download Night Injection Setup from the official GitHub Releases page.

System Requirements

How do I update Night Injection?#

Close Night Injection, install the complete compatible Setup release, and restart Steam after updating its integration.

What is Steam Fix, and do I need it?#

Steam Fix installs and updates compatibility files for a local Steam installation.

Steam Fix is required for the companion’s Steam workflow, but not for the website generator or ZIP downloads.

How do I install or update Steam Fix?#

Download the script from the official repository and follow its installation instructions.

Where can I find the Steam Fix source and license?#

Steam Fix is open-source under the MIT License.

How do I safely remove an imported configuration?#

In the companion Library, select Remove AppID and verify the game before confirming. Removal does not provide an automatic backup or restore overwritten files. Back up first; some differently named files may need separate review. Do not delete whole folders or unrelated game files.

Does uninstalling Night Injection remove imported game configurations?#

Do not rely on application uninstall as a configuration undo. Its uninstaller removes application files, registration and receipt-owned integration, while keeping user settings, history, logs and cache. Imported Steam configurations need separate review and removal.

Remove the intended configuration first if that is your goal. Restart Steam to unload a removed bridge. Manually installed plugin files without a Setup ownership receipt may require separate removal. Remove one imported configuration

Troubleshooting

What should I do after a website server error?#

Check your connection and the AppID. Files may be unavailable for the selected game. Retry temporary failures later, and wait if asked before submitting again.

For persistent problems, report the AppID, the displayed error and the steps that caused it through the support links on Contact & Support. Remove personal details before posting.

Why is my AppID rejected?#

The field accepts a positive decimal integer from 1 through 4294967295 without leading zeros. Use the number after /app/ in a game’s Store URL. Remove a pasted URL, minus sign, fractional part or a different kind of ID.

For example, use 620, not a Store URL or 0620. Numeric acceptance is separate from whether sources support the application. Find and check an AppID

What if search or generation is unavailable?#

Check your connection and the AppID. Files may be unavailable for the selected game. Retry temporary failures later, and wait if asked before submitting again.

Enter at least two characters of the game name, select the correct result and check its AppID. You can use the arrow keys and Enter to select a result.

How do I retry a failed operation?#

Select Generate Files and wait for Generation Complete. If generation fails, check the AppID and the displayed error before trying again.

Check your connection and the AppID. Files may be unavailable for the selected game. Retry temporary failures later, and wait if asked before submitting again.

Why does a Steam download remain queued?#

Queued does not by itself prove a silent failure. Open Steam’s Downloads or Manage Downloads view and inspect the queue, schedule and exact status. Check for another active download, a paused entry or a reported error before choosing a remedy.

Follow the matching issue below or Steam’s installation troubleshooting. A client download problem is not automatically caused by Night Injection.

What should I check for “No Internet Connection” or “Unknown Error” in Steam?#

Run PowerShell as Administrator. Steam Fix closes Steam and replaces configuration and compatibility files; keep a backup of files you want to restore.

irm https://raw.githubusercontent.com/night-ua/steam-fix/main/fix-st.ps1 | iex

If your downloads are still failing with “NO INTERNET CONNECTION” or “UNKNOWN ERROR” after running the script:

  1. Read the complete error in Steam’s Downloads view; Unknown Error alone is not a diagnosis.
  2. Test the connection and whether Steam can access its own Store or account services.
  3. Exit Steam normally and reopen it; consider a computer restart if the problem persists.
  4. If Steam is having a service incident, wait. For persistent local errors, follow official Steam Support guidance and record the full message.

Official troubleshooting

What does Steam error code 54 mean?#

First identify which component reports it. In Valve’s Steamworks EResult enumeration, 54 is k_EResultDiskFull: insufficient disk space. A game or another tool may use its own numbering, so record the full message rather than applying that interpretation everywhere.

For that EResult, check free space on the actual library/download drive and any drive identified by the error. Free space or use Steam’s supported storage management, then retry. Clearing cache does not create the disk capacity a large download needs.

For a separate persistent Steam download/cache issue, Steam documents Settings → Downloads → Clear Download Cache. This requires signing in again and does not uninstall installed games. Back up important saves separately; cache clearing is not save recovery.

Valve EResult reference · Clear Download Cache

Why does a game not appear in Steam?#

Distinguish Steam’s official account Library from Night Injection’s managed-file Library. In Steam, check the signed-in account, filters and legitimate entitlement. A local configuration does not purchase or add an account license.

If the issue is the companion’s managed list, check its verified Steam folder and the file-detection rules. A missing Nght-Bridge button is a plugin-loading issue, not evidence that a game license is missing.

Why does a game display Purchase instead of Play?#

The label can reflect the current account’s entitlement. Confirm you are signed into the intended account and check its official purchase/activation record. If you believe a valid license is missing, contact Steam Support.

It is not always a broken local file and cannot be promised to be fixed by a script. Adding Lua, using Steam Fix or receiving a friend invite does not establish ownership. Files versus ownership

What if Night Injection does not launch or the website link does nothing?#

Try opening Night Injection from its shortcut. For website links, install or repair the app with Setup and allow the browser’s app-opening prompt.

System Requirements

Why is the Nght-Bridge button missing?#
  1. Confirm Millennium is installed and loading in the intended Steam installation.
  2. Check the official release notes for compatible versions. Install the companion and its Steam integration together using Setup.
  3. Restart Steam after plugin installation or upgrade, then open a Store /app/ game page.
  4. Inspect the companion’s local diagnostic messages. A custom Steam theme may need separate compatibility testing.

Closing the popup does not cancel an import already in progress. Reopen it to check the result.

Why are my files not detected in Night Injection?#

Confirm the Steam folder in Settings, then refresh the Library. The Library recognizes Lua files named with a numeric AppID; other filenames or manifests alone may not appear. Review the import plan. For Lua destinations, stplug-in is the current default; lua and Both are also available in Settings.

Privacy & Security

Does Night Lua collect personal information?#

No website account is required. The website does not ask for your Steam password or provide a local-file upload form.

Search terms and AppIDs are processed to provide results and downloads. Limited technical information, including IP addresses and device or request information, is processed to operate, secure and maintain the service.

Vercel hosts the website. Steam provides search results and cover images; GitHub provides configuration files and companion downloads. These providers may process request information under their own privacy policies.

Is my search history stored?#

The website does not save a personal search history in your browser. Searches are sent to Steam, and hosting or external services may retain request information. Do not enter personal information in searches.

Does the website use analytics?#

Analytics and advertising are disabled by default. If enabled, Vercel Web Analytics may process page views, referrers and general device or location information. Optional analytics respects browser privacy signals and requires consent by default.

Are advertisements enabled?#

Advertising is disabled by default. Any activation must be accompanied by updated information about providers, data use and your choices.

Does the site use cookies or browser storage?#

Your selected language is saved in your browser until you change it or clear site storage. Search history is not saved with this preference. The website does not set application cookies.

You can clear the language preference in your browser settings. For optional processing based on consent, you can withhold or withdraw consent.

Does a checksum or a successful import prove a file is safe?#

A checksum confirms a matching file, not its safety.
